Welcome to this edition of the eShare governance newsletter, covering the latest developments in the industry and what eShare is doing to help.

In this issue we are focussing on The Regulator's latest Governance Survey and what this means for schemes and their trustees.  Also we have the latest news on our Seminar next month and how you can get involved.

TPR Governance Survey 2007
TPR Survey
Last month The Pension Regulator issued their latest Governance Survey.  The Survey covers 500 pension schemes in the UK of different structures and sizes.

The results aim to give The Regulator guidance on how they focus their efforts, as well as present an overall picture of our industry.

The key findings of the survey are as follows:
  • Higher levels of trustee training continue to be associated with higher levels of governance activity and the understanding of the board
  • There has been an increase in trustee training
  • Schemes are not experiencing significant difficulties in recruiting or retaining trustees
  • The improvement in trustee understanding has generally not yet translated into greater confidence of trustee boards in managing their schemes
  • Scheme confidence in managing conflicts of interest has increased significantly and most schemes consider they manage conflicts effectively
  • The majority of DB schemes have investigated the financial standing of the employer over the past year
  • 3/5 of schemes have a process to identify the risks that could affect the scheme and its members
  • Open schemes show greatest improvement over the year
  • Larger schemes are monitoring schemes administration more closely than smaller schemes

eControls
The Regulator's latest Governance Survey found that there is still a great deal of work to be done where control and risk management is concerned.  The Survey's results state that only 51% of respondents had put Internal Controls in place to manage these risks.

At eShare we appreciate that producing a risk register is perhaps the easiest part.  Properly reviewing all the risks regularly, identifiying mitigating actions and maintaing an audit trail is a mammoth task.

That's why we have developed eControls a complete risk management software module.  It manages the whole risk process for you, saving time and money and making it easy to take risk seriously.

eControls manages the risk register, rating risks according to their impact and likelihood. Risks can be assigned to individuals or committees within eMeetings.  Once allocated, eControls ensures each risk is looked after and a full audit trail is maintained to each risk review.
